Kurt Cobain’s jeans - The Most Expensive Levi's

Kurt Cobain was the lead singer and guitarist of Nirvana, the 1987 grunge band formed in Aberdeen, Washington. They went on to be one of the best selling bands of all time.

Nirvana's second album ”Nevermind” released in 1991 was their most successful selling over 30 million copies worldwide and shooting the band into international fame bringing grunge into mainstream music.

As the popularity of the band grew so did the prominence of Cobain. He was know for his anti-establishment persona and angsty song lyrics during the 1990's.

His life and career however were marked with mental health issues and substance abuse, ultimately leading to the singer's tragic suicide on April 5 1994, a major cultural event that brought increased national and worldwide attention.

On August 31 and September 1 1993 the music video to Nirvana’s ”Heart Shaped Box” was filmed at Raleigh Studios in Los Angeles. During the filming Kurt Cobain wore a pair of distressed and patched Levi’s jeans. (believed to be 501, 34x34)

He wore the same jeans at the MTV Awards a day later on September 2 where the band went on to win ”Best Alternative Video” for their ”In Bloom” music video.

Lori Barbero drummer of the band "Babes in Toyland" gifted Cobain the pair of Levi's 501 jeans that she had lovingly patched by hand in 1993. The jeans became famous after being worn by him on stage during at the Roseland Ballroom in New York City during the In Utero tour. (Kurt Cobain suffered a heroin overdose shortly before the show but he was revived and went on to play a very memorable set)

Barbero was a peer and close friend to Cobain, and he was known to value her friendship deeply. She was instrumental in the production of Nirvana's final studio album and played a key role in the decision for Nirvana to record In Utero in Cannon Falls, Minnesota, at Pachyderm Studio.

During the immense fame of Nevermind, Barbero was part of an inner circle of friends who cared about Cobain not just as a rock star but as a person witnessing the toll fame was taking on him.

If $400k is a little too excessive for a slice of history, £732 ($1000) can buy you jeans that are similar to those worn by Kurt Cobain.

Even though there is no claim by Amiri that their Ma Quad Airpatch jeans are a direct copy of Cobain's Levi's, the inspiration is clearly there.

"The Amiri MA Quad Air Patch jeans are inspired by a blend

of Los Angeles street culture, 1990s rock 'n' roll, and grunge aesthetics."
